How to Add Hosts in a Trusted Domain

You can use the following procedure in Virtual Machine Manager to add one or more virtual machine hosts in a trusted domain.

Note

When you add a host, VMM automatically installs or upgrades to Virtual Server 2005 R2 with Service Pack 1.

To add virtual machine hosts in a trusted domain

In any view in the VMM Administrator Console, on the Actions pane, click Add hosts to open the Add Hosts Wizard.
On the Select Host Location page, click No to indicate that the host is not on a perimeter network.
On the Select Host Servers page, in the Host server domain box, type the fully qualified domain name and then do one of the following:
1. In the Host server name box, type the computer name of a host in the specified domain that you want to add to VMM and then click Add.
2. Click Find to search for hosts. For more information about searching for hosts, see How to Search for Hosts.

  If you add multiple hosts at one time, these hosts will share the same host group, VMRC access configuration, and virtual machine default paths. After adding the hosts, you can change the properties for individual hosts by modifying the host properties for each. For more information about modifying host properties, see Modifying the Properties of a Host.
On the Enter Credentials page, specify a domain account that has administrative rights on the host.

Note

To add multiple hosts at one time, the credentials you provide must be for a domain account that has administrative rights on all the selected hosts.
On the Configuration Settings page, do the following:
1. In the Host group list, select a host group to contain the hosts, or accept the default host group, All Hosts, which is the parent host group of all hosts and host groups.
  The host group determines host reserves, placement defaults, and self-service policies for users who access their own virtual machines though virtual machine self-service. For more information, see About Host Groups.
2. If one or more of the computers you are adding is a host or a library server that is currently associated with another VMM server, select the Reassociate agent with Virtual Machine Manager server check box to associate the VMM agents on those computers with the current VMM server.
In the Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC) area, do the following:
1. VMRC is enabled by default. If you would like to disable VMRC, clear the VRMC enabled check box.

  If you disable VMRC, all other VMRC configuration options become unavailable.
2. In the VMRC port box, set the port that the VMRC client will use to communicate with Virtual Server. The default port is 5900; you can enter any value from 1–65535.

  You do not need to enter a firewall exception for the VMRC port.
3. If you would like to enforce a connection time-out for VMRC access, select the Enable connection timeout option and then specify the time-out interval. The default time-out interval is 15 minutes; you can enter any value from 1–600.
4. If you would like to allow multiple users to access virtual machines on this host, select the Allow multiple VMRC connections check box. For more information about allowing multiple connections, see About Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC).
  
  Important
  
  You cannot enable security for VMRC by using the Add Hosts Wizard. You can enable security only by modifying the host properties in the VMM Administrator Console after it has been added. For more information about enabling security for VMRC, see How to Modify VMRC Settings on a Host.
On the Virtual Machine Paths wizard page, optionally specify one or more default paths for storing new virtual machines on the hosts. These paths are added to the host, along with the default virtual machine path that is configured by Virtual Server. For more information about VMRC access, see About Default Virtual Machine Paths.
