Configuring Virtual Machine Manager

This topic provides an overview of required and optional configuration tasks for Virtual Machine Manager, with links to the procedures for performing them in the VMM Administrator Console.
Required Configuration Tasks
To get started using Virtual Machine Manager, you need to perform the following configurations.

Add VMM administrators (for more information, see Managing User Roles) All local administrators on the VMM server have full administrator rights in Virtual Machine Manager. In VMM 2008, you also can create Delegated Administrator user roles to give others in your organization full administrative rights on specified host groups and library servers. |

Until you add a virtual machine host to be managed by Virtual Machine Manager, many views and actions in the VMM Administrator Console are not available. |

Use host groups to organize your hosts based on your organization’s needs. Host groups also determine which hosts are available during automatic placement for virtual machine self-service, during Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO), and during drag-and-drop migrations to a host group. |

Configure the Virtual Machine Manager library All files that you use to create virtual machines and templates, including scripts, ISO images, and virtual hard disks, must be catalogued in the Virtual Machine Manager library. This is done by adding library servers and designating library shares on those servers. If you store your Windows PowerShell scripts on a library share, you can view and run them in Library view. |

Configure Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) Based on performance and health data provided by PRO-enabled management packs in System Center Operations Manager 2007, Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) can automatically or manually implement PRO tips, which are recommendations for minimizing downtime and accelerating time to resolution. After you identify your Operations Manager 2007 root management server, enable PRO for each host group and host cluster that you want to participate by specifying the severity levels of PRO tips to receive and to automatically implement. |

Set up virtual machine self-service Allow users to create and manage their own virtual machines within a controlled environment by using the VMM Self-Service Portal. |

Configure system-wide settings for Virtual Machine Manager Configure a variety of system-wide settings for Virtual Machine Manager. For example, you can set the library refresh interval, customize placement options for host ratings, specify ports to use for virtual machine connections, or set a global static MAC address range for virtual network devices. |

Configure VMM to manage a VMware Infrastructure 3 environment To manage your VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3) environment in VMM, add the VMware VirtualCenter server to VMM, configure security for the VMware ESX Server hosts, and then import your VMware templates to the VMM library so that you can use them in VMM.
