Understanding performance
Applies To: Forefront Client Security
Client Security uses the management power of MOM 2005, the storage and reporting capabilities of SQL Server 2005, and the update benefits of WSUS. Each of these products affects the performance of the servers on which they are installed. For this reason, when planning your deployment and performance tuning, it is recommended that you follow the guidelines for each prerequisite, in addition to the guidelines in the appropriate Client Security publication:
For information about tuning MOM 2005 performance, see Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Performance and Sizing Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=85442).
For information about tuning SQL Server 2005 performance, see Planning for Scalability and Performance with Reporting Services (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=85443) and Monitoring and Tuning for Performance (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=85444).
For information about tuning SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, see Planning for Scalability and Performance with Reporting Services (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86820).
For information about tuning WSUS performance, see Design the WSUS Deployment (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86822) and Design the WSUS 3.0 Deployment (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86825).
Implementing performance
Performance tuning includes the following:
Establish the baseline at which performance is acceptable to you.
This step is one of the most important in the process; without a set of data defining the desired functioning of the system, it becomes difficult to determine areas of poor performance at a later time.
Collect performance data.
Evaluate collected data against optimal performance.
Tune server parameters.
Add resources.
You can adjust the following resources to improve performance:
Processors
Memory (RAM and paging file)
Disk subsystems
Network subsystem
After making performance tuning changes, collect performance data to determine if your changes had the desired effect.
This process takes time; therefore, you want to begin with the best possible configuration for achieving maximum return on your performance. Appropriate server sizing for your topology allows you to take full advantage of Client Security features.
