Application Center Monitors

This section defines data collectors and describes server and cluster health.

Data Collectors

Data collectors are objects that collect, receive, and hold WMI data. Application Center installs and configures several data collectors, thresholds, and actions by default. Some of these are set to be active while others are set to be inactive and are ready to be activated or to serve as examples. Application Center stores these data collectors in a read-only directory on your computer's disk drive.

To specify the data to collect, when to collect it, and from which member, you create and configure data collectors in the Health Monitor console. You can add custom data collectors and thresholds to Application Center. You can create a threshold for a data collector. The possible states of a data collector are: Critical, Warning, Scheduled Outage, Disabled, Okay, Reset, and Collecting. Of these, Critical, Warning, Disabled, and Okay are the most common.

 Caution   Data collectors in the data group Synchronized Monitors (Application Center) are synchronized across the cluster. If you add or change any data collectors on individual cluster members that are in this data group, the data collectors are overwritten to match the controller values during the next synchronization cycle.

Server Status

The server status icons indicate overall reliability, availability, and functional performance. The server health icon summarizes several Health Monitor data collectors, thresholds, and other monitoring data. If even one monitor is critical, the icon and message indicates a Critical level. The Status area tells you about the progress of any processes that your computer or cluster is undergoing, such as synchronization.

Health Monitor is constantly collecting data about the status of your cluster and members. You can view this data in the Application Center snap-in, but Application Center also provides a way to monitor all of your computers at once through the server health icon. The server health icon summarizes data collectors, thresholds, and other monitoring data and tells you if even one of them has reached the Warning or Critical level. If the icon is green, you can be sure that all of these detailed monitors are fine and your cluster and members are operating normally.

Server Health

The following table describes the server (cluster or member) health icons.

Icon	Status	Description
	Normal	The cluster or member is operating normally.
	Warning	A warning threshold has been exceeded. Action is needed in a particular area, but the cluster or member is still functioning in other areas.
	Critical	A critical threshold has been exceeded. Immediate action is necessary because the cluster or member might be offline.
	Unknown	The status of the cluster or member could not be determined. The most frequent cause is that a member is offline, is experiencing network problems, or Health Monitor is not installed.

Load Balancing Status

The following table describes the load balancing status icons.

Icon	Status	Description
	Normal	Load balancing is operating normally.
	Suspended	A warning threshold has been exceeded and the member has been taken out of the load-balancing loop.
	Offline	A critical threshold has been exceeded and the member has been taken out of the load-balancing loop.
	Unknown	The status of load balancing could not be determined.
	Not installed	Load balancing has not been installed on this member.
	Draining (connections)	Load balancing is draining user connections in preparation for deployment.

Health Monitor Summary

The following table describes the Health Monitor summary icons.

Icon	Status	Description
	Good	All monitors for the cluster or member are normal.
	Warning	A warning threshold has been exceeded. Action is needed in a particular area, but the cluster or member is still functioning in other areas.
	Critical	A critical threshold has been exceeded. Immediate action is necessary because the cluster or member might be offline.
	Unknown	The status of the cluster or member could not be determined. The most frequent cause is that a member is offline or is experiencing network problems.

Synchronization Status

The following table describes the synchronization status icons.

Icon	Status	Description
	Normal	Synchronization status is Normal or Idle.
	In progress	Synchronization is in progress.
	Manual	Synchronization is on-demand synchronization.
	Unknown	Synchronization status is Unknown.
