Installing Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server
Applies to: Forefront Protection for Exchange
Important
-
All minimum system requirements must be met before installing Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE). For more information, see Verifying system requirements.
-
To run the FPE installation program on Exchange Server 2007, you must have Local Admin privileges. For information about the security credentials required when installing FPE on Exchange Server 2010, see Security credentials required for installing on Exchange Server 2010.
Note
FPE ships with the Microsoft Forefront Server Protection Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007. The management pack is an optional component that works with Operations Manager 2007 and is used to monitor the health of your FPE systems. FPE works correctly if the management pack is not installed.
You can run the FPE installer by:
Double-clicking the forefrontexchangesetup.exe file—This launches the Setup Wizard and proceeds with the full installation steps described in Installing on a standalone server by using the Setup Wizard.
Note
By launching the installer in this manner, you cannot input any external options and parameters.
Running the extracted setup.exe file from a command prompt in order to specify external options and parameters—If you do not specify parameters, Setup launches the Setup Wizard. You can also launch the following “unattended” installation types from a command prompt:
Silent installation with an answer file.
Passive installation with an answer file.
For information about these installation types, see Installing from a command prompt - specifying parameters.
Each option caters to a different scenario, but all options ensure the following:
All product components are installed.
The file structure, files, services, and registry keys are created.
The product is correctly configured and logs errors as necessary.
If a non-FPE antimalware product is already protecting your Exchange environment, it will be disabled in favor of FPE during the installation.
Tip
After installation, Microsoft recommends managing FPE on multiple servers, such as in an enterprise, with the Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC). You can download FPSMC from the Microsoft Download Center at the following location: Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC) 2010. Documentation for FPSMC can be found in the TechNet library at Forefront Protection Server Management Console. Otherwise, you can install and configure FPE on a single server, and then export and import these configuration settings to additional servers (keeping in mind that each FPE installation must be performed individually on that server first). For more information, see Exporting and importing configuration settings.
