About enterprise storage

Updated: February 1, 2011

Applies To: Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG)

In Forefront TMG, the configuration settings of all servers in an array are stored in a central location, in an Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) storage.

The storage location depends on the type of Forefront TMG array, as follows:

  • Standalone array—In a standalone array, the configuration settings are stored in a configuration store on the array manager server. This storage method, which is also used to store settings on a standalone Forefront TMG server, is similar to the Configuration Storage Server (CSS), which was used to store configuration settings and enterprise policies in ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition.

  • Array managed by Enterprise Management Server (EMS)—In an array that is managed by an EMS, the configuration settings are stored on the EMS.

In both array types, AD LDS is also installed locally on all Forefront TMG array members, and is disabled when the Forefront TMG server joins the array. Array members access either the array manager (in the standalone array) or EMS (in the EMS-managed array) to update configuration settings, and enterprise and array policies.
