Check spelling in one or more pages
Microsoft Expression Web can look for and correct misspelled words in one or more pages, folders, or an entire website. You can also correct or ignore spelling errors directly in the Design view of a web page.
If you don't want Expression Web to mark a particular word as misspelled, you can add it to the default custom dictionary.
Tip
Expression Web provides several options that affect the results provided by the spellchecker, and options to mark spelling errors in Design view and check spelling as you type. In order for Expression Web to mark misspelled words with a wavy line, Check spelling as you type must be selected, and Hide spelling errors must be cleared in the Spelling Options dialog box. For more information, see Set spelling options.
To fix spelling inline
In Design view, in your web page, right-click a word that has a wavy red line beneath it, and then in the shortcut menu that appears, do one of the following:
To replace the word with a suggested word, select the suggested word.
To unmark the word as misspelled, select Ignore All.
To add the word to the default custom dictionary so that Expression Web doesn't mark the word as misspelled, select Add.
To check the spelling on a single page
In Design view or Code view, in your web page, do one of the following:
On the Standard toolbar, click the Spelling button .
On the Tools menu, point to Spelling, and click Spelling.
If Expression Web doesn't find any spelling errors, the Microsoft Expression Web dialog box appears and states that the spelling check is complete.
If Expression Web finds a spelling error, the Spelling dialog box appears, and the misspelled word appears in the Not in Dictionary box.
If Expression Web finds a spelling error, in the Spelling dialog box, do one of the following:
To replace the word with a word from the Suggestions box, click the suggested word.
To show a new set of suggestions that are based on text that you specify, in the Change To box, type the text you want the spellchecker to consider, and then click Suggest. Click a suggested word.
To correct the word yourself, in the Change To box, type the correct word.
If you want to add the unrecognized word to the default custom dictionary so that Expression Web doesn't mark the word as misspelled, click Add. Skip step 3.
To ignore the current instance, click Ignore. Skip step 3.
To ignore all instances of the word, click Ignore All. Skip step 3.
To replace the misspelled word in your page with the word in the Change to box, do one of the following:
To replace only the current instance, click Change.
To replace all instances of the word, click Change All.
To check spelling in a website
Open your website.
In either the Folder List task pane or the Web Site window, do one of the following:
To check the spelling in the entire website, do nothing and proceed to the next step.
To check the spelling of only selected pages, select the pages and folders you want to check.
Do one of the following:
On the Standard toolbar, click the Spelling button .
On the Tools menu, point to Spelling, and click Spelling.
In the Spelling dialog box, under Check spelling of, do one of the following:
To check the spelling of only selected pages, click Selected page(s).
To check the spelling of the entire website, click Entire Web site.
Click Start.
If Expression Web doesn't find a spelling error, the status bar at the bottom of the Spelling dialog box displays No spelling errors were found.
If Expression Web finds a spelling error, in the Spelling dialog box, double-click the row in the list for the page you want to edit. Expression Web opens the page and prompts you to address the unrecognized or misspelled words. To correct or ignore the spelling errors, see steps 3 and 4 in the preceding section entitled "To check the spelling in a single page."
When you have reviewed all occurrences of the misspelled words in the page, do one of the following:
To close the current page and continue to the next page in the list, in the Continue with the next page? dialog box, select the Close this page check box and then click Next Page.
To close the current page and return to the list, in the Continue with the next page? dialog box, select the Close this page check box and then click Back to List.
To leave the current page open and continue to the next page in the list, in the Continue with the next page? dialog box, clear the Close this page check box and then click Next Page.
To leave the current page open and return to the list, in the Continue with the next page? dialog box, clear the Close this page check box and then click Back to List.
Do one of the following:
To open the next page that contains spelling errors, click Next Page.
To return to the Spelling dialog box that contains the list of pages that contain spelling errors, click Back To List.
