Trim and cut media
You can perform any number of cut edits to your media, and also trim both the original in and out points of the media and the in and out points of your cuts. Although all your cuts are immediately applied, you can choose to display the cut sections on the Microsoft Expression Encoder Timeline, in case you want to restore or adjust them. If you choose to display the clips, the Timeline displays them in red.
Trimming or cutting media in Expression Encoder involves first splicing a clip at a specified frame, and then either trimming or deleting the spliced clips. You can perform cuts either in the Timeline or in the Clips panel. If you perform your cuts in the Clips panel, you will see a listing of the in and out points of each clip that you create.
To cut a section of video
On the Timeline, drag the playhead to the point where you want to make the first cut. You can preview the video in the Preview panel as you drag.
Do one of the following:
Right-click the playhead, and then click Add Edit.
Click the Clips tab. If you can't see the Clips tab, on the Window menu, click Clips. In the Clips panel, click Insert an edit at the playhead .
Below the Timeline, click Insert an edit at the playhead .
Repeat steps 1 and 2 to create subsequent cuts.
To remove the clip segment, do one of the following:
On the Timeline, drag the playhead so that it rests inside the clip segment that you want to remove. Right-click the playhead, and then click Remove Clip, or, underneath the Timeline, click Remove the clip under the playhead .
In the Clips panel, locate the range of start and end times that correspond to the clip that you want to remove, and then click Remove clip .
If you want to remove an edit point, first click either Go to next edit or marker or Go to previous edit or marker to navigate to the start time of the edit that you want to remove. Then, do one of the following:
Underneath the Timeline, click Remove the edit at the playhead .
In the Clips panel, click Remove the edit at the playhead .
To view cut clip sections
- Underneath the Timeline, click Show/Hide cut regions . The cut clips appear in red on the Timeline. If you play back the video when Show/Hide cut regions is on, you will not be able to see the effect of the cut in the video playback. In order to view the cut during playback, you must turn off Show/Hide cut regions by clicking the icon again.
To trim a video
On the Timeline, position the pointer over the in or out point either of a cut or of the entire video. Note the right-facing or left-facing trim handles that appear at each cut on either end of the clip.
When the trim handles appear, drag the cut to trim the clip. You cannot extend the in or out point of a clip past the initial boundaries of the clip.
