Publish your media

You can publish a video that you have encoded in Microsoft Expression Encoder by using the Publish category on the Output panel.

In this category, you can publish to a Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol (WebDAV) server. WebDAV publishing works with any WebDAV-enabled server, including Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 running Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 or IIS 7.0.

The Publish category includes a link to additional publishing plug-ins that are available for download online.

Publishing to a WebDAV server

WebDAV is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol that enables the editing and management of files that reside on a remote server. The WebDAV publishing plug-in supports one-click publishing, multiple server configurations, and multiple authentication methods.

Expression Encoder collects the name of the server URL that you want to use, and the user name and password to be authenticated on the server. Expression Encoder encrypts the user name and password, and stores them locally (if the Save Password check box is selected). When the publishing process is initiated, the user name and password will be sent to the server based on the authentication method chosen.

Important

Some authentication methods are not secure; they send the user name and password in an unencrypted or easily decrypted format. Make sure that you are aware of the encryption policies of the authentication method that you are using.

The WebDAV plug-ins support the following types of server authentication:

  • Basic   Requires that a user specify a user name and password before files can be uploaded to a server. Basic authentication sends the user name and password as unencrypted text.

  • Digest   Requires that a user specify a user name and password before files can be uploaded to a server. Digest authentication applies a digest algorithm (a form of encryption) to the user name and password before sending them to the server.

  • Windows   Uses the credentials cached on the Windows client computer to validate the user's permissions on the server. This is the default authentication option in the Publish category.

  • Anonymous   Allows any user to upload files to a server without using a user name or password.

To publish to a WebDAV server

  1. Click the Output tab. If you can't see the Output tab, on the Window menu, click Output.

  2. Expand the Publish category.

  3. On the Publish To menu, choose WebDAV.

  4. If you want Expression Encoder to automatically publish your media following the encoding process, select Publish after encode.

    Important

Do not click the Publish button until you have entered your publishing settings, as described in the following steps.

  5. The following options appear in the Settings section. Set these options according to the following descriptions:

    • Server URL   Type or select the location of the server to which you want to publish your media.

    • Directory Name   Type the name of the directory to which you want to publish the folder or file. To upload the entire folder and not just a single file, select the Use job output folder check box.

    • Authentication   Select the authentication that you want to use.

    • Username   Select or type the user name that you want to use.

    • Password   Type the password that you want to use. To save the password, click Save Password. To show the password as text, click Show Password.

    • Authenticate   Click this before you publish to validate your credentials on the server.

  6. Set the following options (click Show/Hide properties to reveal them):

    • Directories   View all the media that you have uploaded to the server.

    • Refresh   Click this to refresh your Directories display.

    • Preview   Select a file from the list, and then click this to see a preview of the file.

    • Delete   Select a file or directory from the list, and then click this to remove it from the server.

  7. Encode your media. If you selected the Publish after encode option, Expression Encoder will publish the media following the encoding process. If you want to manually publish your media, in the Media Content panel, select the items that you want to publish, and, in the Publish category, click Publish.
