How to: Configure the Dialog Boxes of Test Edition

While you work with Visual Studio Team System Test Edition, certain situations occur for which Visual Studio requires confirmation or guidance, which it requests from you through a dialog box. For descriptions of the situations in which this occurs, see Dialog Boxes of Test Edition.

You can respond every time that a dialog box prompts you. However, if you expect to answer the same way every time for a particular dialog box, you can choose a default setting. For more information, see Setting a Default Answer.

Setting a Default Answer

In this procedure, you use the dialog box to set a default answer that will be used when the same situation occurs in the future.

To set a default answer for a dialog box

  1. In the dialog box, click Do not show this dialog box again and then answer the question posed by the dialog box.

    This has the following effects:

    • It sets the answer that you chose as the default answer for this dialog box.

    • It suppresses the display of this dialog box in the future. The only way to re-enable display of the dialog box is to perform the steps in Configuring Dialog Box Functionality and, in step 3, select Always prompt.

    Note

    Clicking Cancel does not set a default even if you have selected Do not show this dialog box again.

  2. (Optional) To change your default answer, use the Options dialog box as described in Configuring Dialog Box Functionality.

Configuring Dialog Box Functionality

In this procedure, you use the Options dialog box to turn any one of the settings for the dialog box into a default setting. Sometimes this setting means to take a specific action, such as to interpret a drag-and-drop operation as "import" instead of "load." Sometimes it just means to notify you when an action occurs automatically, such as the removal of a manual test from a remote test run.

To configure Test Tools dialog box functionality

  1. Click Tools and then click Options.

    This displays the Options dialog box.

  2. Expand Test Tools and then click Default Dialog Action.

    This displays the Default Dialog Action page. Each row in the table on this page controls one particular dialog box.

  3. Use the right column in the table to specify the default behavior for each dialog box. For more information about your choices and their meanings, see Dialog Boxes of Test Edition.

    In addition to letting you select a default behavior, the Options dialog box gives you one more choice for most dialog boxes, which, in effect, lets you decline to set a default behavior. This choice is:

    • Always prompt. The dialog box will prompt you for a response every time this situation occurs.

  4. Click OK.
