Active or deleted files have long paths

The information in this article applies to:

  • Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010

  • Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008

  • SQL Server 2008

  • Team Foundation Server Complete Health Check

  • Team Foundation Server Framework Health Check

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server determines the path length of the working folder that contains files that are stored under Team Foundation version control. One of the following warnings appears if the path length for either active or deleted files exceeds 240 characters:

  • Non-deleted space contains {0} file(s) with long path(s)

  • Deleted space contains {0} file(s) with long path(s)

Error messages might appear when the path exceeds 260 characters. (You cannot change the maximum path length of 260 characters. The warning appears if the path contains 240 characters or more.) In addition, file paths can become even longer when files are renamed or merged, and error messages regarding the total path length might appear.

To resolve this issue, you must restructure your folders and files that are stored in version control so that the path of the working folder contains fewer than 240 characters.
