Checklist: Installing Team Foundation Build Service

You can follow the steps in this checklist to install Team Foundation Build Service and connect to Visual Studio Team Foundation Server.

Check for supported hardware and software. Verify that the operating system meets requirements for Team Foundation Build Service and that the hardware can run it.

Check for required permissions and user accounts. Verify that the account that you will use to install Team Foundation Build Service is a member of the Administrators security group on the server where you will install Team Foundation Build Service. 

If the account you are using to install Team Foundation Build Service (mentioned above) is also a member of the Project Collection Administrators group in Team Foundation Server, the build service account (TFSBUILD) will be automatically added to the Build Services Security group in Team Foundation Server. If you do not know whether the account that you are using is a member of the Project Collection Administrators group, procedures are provided below to grant TFSBUILD the appropriate permissions after installation and initial configuration.

Determine the service accounts that you will use to install Team Foundation Build Service (TFSBUILD).

Check for supported environment settings. If you have a firewall between the server where you want to run Team Foundation Build Service and any clients or other servers that must connect to or be connected to Team Foundation Build Service, verify that the ports required by Team Foundation Build Service are open.

If Windows Firewall is on and configured to allow exceptions, the installation wizard for Team Foundation Build Service creates appropriate exceptions.

If you are using a different firewall or Windows Firewall is configured to disallow exceptions, you must open the ports manually before you install Team Foundation Build Service.

By performing these tasks, you can install and configure Team Foundation Build Service.

Set up Team Foundation Build Service. Install Team Foundation Build Service, and then configure it by using the Team Foundation Server Configuration tool.

Final configuration on Team Foundation Server.

You must make some final configurations on Team Foundation Server before you can use Team Foundation Build Service unless the account that you used to install Team Foundation Build Service is also a member of the Team Foundation Server Project Collection Administrators group. If so, this last step is done automatically for you.
