Team Foundation Server Upgrade Types
You can upgrade from one edition of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 to another. For example, you can upgrade from a trial edition to a full edition. Before you purchase the edition to which you want to upgrade, you should make sure not only that the edition is appropriate for your business needs but also that the upgrade path is supported. You should also consider the licensing requirements for upgrading your edition. For more information about licensing, see the following page on the Microsoft Web site: Visual Studio 2010 Licensing White Paper.
You can also upgrade from an earlier version of Team Foundation Server to Team Foundation Server 2010, but this change requires additional steps.
Warning
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CUSTOMERS UPGRADING FROM EARLIER VERSIONS OF TEAM FOUNDATION SERVER
You should apply the following update after you install Team Foundation Server 2010 but before you start the configuration process. This update will prevent an issue caused by a specific pattern of version control operations that affects the upgrade of version control labels and merges. To download this update, see the following page on the Microsoft Web site. For more information, see the following Microsoft Support page.
For information about how to upgrade from Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server or Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server, see Scenario: Upgrading Team Foundation Server, or download the installation guide from the following page on the Microsoft Web site: Installation Guide for Team Foundation.
Team Foundation Server Upgrades
You can obtain two editions of Team Foundation Server 2010:
Team Foundation Server Trial Edition This edition is available as a free download and has all the functionality of the full edition, but it expires after 90 days. For more information, see the Microsoft Web site.
Team Foundation Server This edition is the full edition of Team Foundation Server 2010. You can install and configure this edition in several ways:
**Basic Configuration **This configuration is the simplest to install but does not have integrated support for SharePoint Products or SQL Server Reporting Services. On a server operating system, you can add SharePoint Products and reporting resources to the configuration after installation, but any projects you create before adding resources will not have access to the reporting and SharePoint website resources of a team project created with these resources in place. To add SharePoint website and reporting resources to these projects, you must perform additional steps. For more information, see Add a Report Server to Your Deployment, Add a SharePoint Web Application to Your Deployment, Customizing Your Team Project Resources, and Creating, Customizing, and Managing Reports for Visual Studio ALM.
**Standard Configuration **This configuration is limited to one server but includes integrated support for SharePoint Products and Reporting Services by default. You can expand your deployment by adding resources on other servers and integrating them into your deployment. For more information, see Add a Report Server to Your Deployment, Add a SharePoint Web Application to Your Deployment, Examples of Moderate Topology, Examples of Complex Topology, Restore Data to a Different Server or Instance, Restore an Application-Tier Server, and Move a Team Project Collection.
**Advanced Configuration **This configuration typically utilizes different servers for its application tier and data tier and can also utilize SharePoint Products and reporting resources that are installed on separate servers.
Supported Upgrade Paths
You can upgrade to Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 in the following ways:
From a previous version to Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010
From a prerelease version to the released version
From the trial edition to the full edition
From a basic or standard configuration to a more advanced configuration
Note
Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 has different prerequisites and requirements than previous versions of Team Foundation Server did. You might need to upgrade some other aspects of your deployment before you can upgrade to Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010. For example, Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 does not support SQL Server 2005. If your deployment utilizes that version of SQL Server, you must upgrade it as part of upgrading to Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010. For more information, see the installation guide for Team Foundation.
Product Key Considerations
During the upgrade of Team Foundation Server, you must provide a product key. If you acquired Team Foundation Server through a volume licensing program, the key is embedded in the installation medium and can be difficult to find. For more information, see Locate or Change the Product Key for Team Foundation Server.
Using Reports After You Upgrade Your Server
If you upgraded your deployment of Team Foundation Server from a previous version, you might need to perform extra steps to view previous reports or to upgrade the types of reports and dashboards that are available for your team projects. For more information, see Locating Reports After the Upgrade to Team Foundation Server 2010, Add SharePoint Features to an Upgraded Team Project Portal, and Updating an Upgraded Team Project to Access New Features.
