Handling errors in speech apps for Windows Phone 8

Although occasionally you'll encounter a managed exception when dealing with the speech feature, the majority of speech errors are returned in HResult format. You can use the debugger to view both the individual error code, and the error description, and you can use try-catch statements in your code to take corrective action.

Handling the speech privacy policy error

When working with speech recognition, the most important error to handle relates to the speech privacy policy. Each time a speech recognition attempt occurs in an app, a privacy policy window appears. If the privacy policy is not accepted, you should ensure that your app handles the error accordingly.

The following code example shows one way you could handle the speech privacy policy error. In this example, a MessageBox control appears and prompts the user to accept the privacy policy.

SPERR_WINRT_NO_RULES 0x800455AA	A grammar contains no top-level, dynamic, or exported rules. There is no possible way to activate or otherwise use any rule in this grammar.
SPERR_WINRT_CIRCULAR_RULE_REF 0x800455AB	Rule 'A' refers to a second rule 'B' which, in turn, refers to rule 'A'.
SPERR_WINRT_NOT_DYNAMIC_GRAMMAR 0x800455AC	Attempt was made to manipulate a non-dynamic grammar.
SPERR_WINRT_AMBIGUOUS_PROPERTY 0x800455AD	Cannot add ambiguous property.
SPERR_WINRT_EXPORT_DYNAMIC_RULE 0x800455AE	Exported rules cannot refer directly or indirectly to a dynamic rule.
SPERR_WINRT_WORDFORMAT_ERROR 0x800455AF	Incorrect word format, probably due to incorrect pronunciation string.
SPERR_WINRT_LANGID_MISMATCH 0x800455B1	An attempt to load a CFG grammar with a LANGID different than other loaded grammars.
SPERR_WINRT_NO_WORD_PRONUNCIATION 0x800455B2	The SR engine is unable to add this word to a grammar. The application may need to supply an explicit pronunciation for this word.
SPERR_WINRT_SML_GENERATION_FAIL 0x800455B3	The SML couldn't be generated. For example, the transformation xslt template is not well formed.

Speech recognition exceptions

In addition to the Windows.Phone.Speech.Recognition namespace error codes, you might encounter the following exceptions when working with speech recognition.

InvalidFormatException	An SRGS grammar file reference by a speech recognizer has an invalid format.
InvalidOperationException	An operation is already in progress.
FileNotFoundException	An SRGS grammar file reference by a speech recognizer cannot be found.
UnauthorizedAccessException	A capability required by speech recognition has not been set.

Speech recognition status errors

When attempting speech recognition by calling the SpeechRecognizerUIRecognizeWithUIAsync()()() method, several errors could occur. For example, speech recognition might not be possible because the phone's speech feature is active. For a full list of these errors, see the SpeechRecognitionUIStatus enumeration.

Windows.Phone.Speech.Synthesis error codes

The following table lists error codes for the Windows.Phone.Speech.Synthesis namespace.

In addition to the Windows.Phone.Speech.Synthesis namespace error codes, you might encounter the following exceptions when working with speech synthesis.

The following table lists error codes for the Windows.Phone.Speech.VoiceCommands namespace. The majority of these errors relate to the Voice Command Definition (VCD) file schema.
