Estimating Configuration Footprint

To estimate and help reduce configuration footprint, before you add a component to a configuration, you can view the compressed and uncompressed sizes of the component and determine the impact the component will have on the footprint. The impact that a component will have is determined in large part by the other components that will have to be added to the configuration to satisfy its dependencies.

To estimate the footprint impact of adding a component

  1. In Windows XP Embedded Target Designer, in the component browser, select the component.

  2. From the Configuration menu, choose Estimate Footprint.

The Estimate Footprint dialog box appears, and a dependency check begins to run against the selected component. After the dependency check is completed, the Estimate Footprint dialog box displays the compressed and uncompressed sizes of the selected component, the total number of components to be added, including the component and all of its dependencies, and the footprint increase and new estimated footprint if the components are added.

If the selected component has dependencies that must be manually resolved, the Resolving DependencyTask dialog box will appear during the dependency check. The tasks to complete and directions for completing each task are displayed in the dialog box.

  3. To add the selected component and all components upon which it is dependent to your configuration, choose Add. To close the Estimate Footprint dialog box without adding the selected component, choose Close.
