You can connect the STMicroelectronics STi7109 MB442 development platform to a development workstation. To connect the device, you will need the following components:
- One power cord
- One null modem serial cable for debug output
- One Ethernet network cable
The following components are optional:
- One set of component video cables
- One RCA audio cable
- One network cable (in addition to the required network cable)
- One USB hub for mouse and keyboard use
- A television (TV) or a composite monitor
To set up the STMicroelectronics STi7109 MB442 development platform hardware
Connect a null modem serial cable from the development workstation to the serial port nearest the printed circuit board on the STMicroelectronics STi7109 MB442 development platform.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the network hub to the RJ45 Ethernet port closest to the power supply of the STMicroelectronics STi7109 MB442 Development Platform.
Optionally, attach the left and right audio cables to the audio connectors closest to the power supply of the development platform.
Optionally, connect the component video cable from the TV or monitor to the component video connectors furthest from the power supply of the development platform.
On the development workstation, configure a terminal program, such as HyperTerminal, to communicate with the STMicroelectronics STi7109 development platform boot loader. The terminal program also displays debug information.
The following table shows you how to configure the COM port on the development workstation.

Connect the power cord and turn on the STMicroelectronics STi7190 MB442 development platform.
The boot loader menu should appear in HyperTerminal. You can change the default video mode on the development platform to match the mode for your connected video output device.
From the boot loader menu, choose option 6 (Set Video Output), and then choose option 2 (Graphic Driver Mode). Next, enter the mode that you want. The default video mode on the development platform is Mode 1 (720p, component video output).
The following modes are available:
- 720p, component video output (default)
- 720p, HDMI output
- 1080i, component video output
- 1080i, HDMI output
- 1024 × 768 VGA, use this option only if you compiled the BSP with the environment variable BSP_VGA_OUT=1
Alternatively, you can change the default video mode in the platform.reg registry file. The registry entry is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\STPDEV "VideoMode". Set this registry value to the new default mode, which can be a mode from the previous list.
If you made changes to the registry structure, start with a clean registry. To clean the registry, on the boot loader menu, choose option 5 (Toggle Clean Registry) to toggle the value to TRUE, and then continue to boot the device.
