Map Integration Guidelines

Windows CE 5.0 Not SupportedWindows Embedded NavReady 2009 Supported

10/16/2008

This topic provides UI guidelines for integrating a Point of Interest (POI) returned from the Live Search Engine with a map on a Windows Embedded NavReady powered device.

Guidelines

User Interaction

  • The map should be accessible with a minimal number of taps from the main-map and the main-menu screens; in particular, one tap from the default map view.
  • From the map, the user should be able to return to the Live Search search-results view (or detailed results view) by using a single tap.

Items displayed in Map View

  • The geographical location of the POI must be shown on the map.
  • The user’s current location, and if programmed, the current route to the POI destination, should also be displayed on the map.

Map Zoom

  • The map should use a default zoom level which includes the whole metropolitan area where the user is currently located. If no GPS location is available, the default view should include the whole metropolitan area with the freshest data.
  • Users should be able to drag and zoom the map in the same manner as they can interact with the road map on the portable navigation device (PND).

Turn-by-Turn Directions to a POI

  • The estimated time of arrival displayed to the user for the POI should be calculated with consideration of traffic conditions. The amount of delay caused by traffic conditions should also be displayed, if it is nonzero.

Favorites Menu

  • Locations delivered through the Live Search application are frequently personal to the user, and can be considered as "Favorites". If the portable navigation device (PND) includes a Favorites menu, you might want to expose the locations from that menu, in addition to providing a link to Favorites in the Live Search application menu UI.
    • Optional: If this approach is taken, a visual representation of the Live Search logo could be added to each favorite search result, to identify listings that were retrieved from the Live Search Engine.

For more information, see Favorites Integration Guidelines.

History Menu

Search results delivered through the Live Search application can be reused by the user. If the portable navigation device (PND) includes a History menu, you can expose the history of search queries that the user has performed in that menu. In addition, you can provide a link to the History menu from the Live Search application main menu.
