Make and receive phone calls
First and foremost, your Windows Embedded 8 Handheld is a phone. Use it to make and receive phone calls to stay in touch with people. Can't talk when someone calls? Let them know you saw they called by replying with a text message.
To make your life easier, and potentially safer, you can use your phone hands-free by using the speaker or a Bluetooth headset.
To make a phone call
On Start, tap Phone.
In History, tap Keypad, enter a phone number, and then tap Call.
Tap End call to hang up.
Tip
-
When you're talking on the phone, you might want to do something else at the same time, like search online or get directions. Tap Speaker when you're on the phone, and then press the Start or Search button to get started. One important thing to know—you won't be able to do things that use cellular data if your phone has a slower cellular data connection at the time.
-
If you want to hang up and you don't see the keypad, tap the notification at the top of the screen, and then tap End call.
-
Want to see if your phone is roaming? Or check out your cellular signal strength or connection type? Just tap the top of the screen to show the status bar, which has icons that tell you these things and more. View icons that show cellular signal strength, letters to indicate your cellular data connection type, and icons that show you whether Airplane mode is turned on, whether call forwarding is turned on, if you're roaming , if you're connected to a Bluetooth device , and the current ringer setting.
-
You can also make a call using Speech. Press and hold the Start button, and then say "Call" and the name of the person you want to call. To learn more, see Use Speech on my handheld device. Speech may not be available in your country or region.
Note
-
To make and receive phone calls, you need an account with a mobile phone operator and a working cellular signal in your current location.

You can't make a call if Airplane mode is turned on. To find the Airplane mode setting on your phone, in the App list, tap Settings > Airplane mode
