Add lockdown features to your image (Industry 8.1)

7/8/2014

Learn how to add lockdown features to your Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry (Industry 8.1) image or device by using Control Panel.

By default, lockdown features are not included in the image when you first install Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry (Industry 8.1). You can use Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM) to configure an answer file to add lockdown features to your image during installation or deployment. You can also add lockdown features to your image after installation by using Control Panel.

Windows SIM is a tool that ships with the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK). To download it, see Windows Deployment with the Windows ADK on MSDN.

Add, enable, and configure lockdown features by using Windows SIM

When you first run Windows SIM, you will need to open an Industry 8.1 .wim file and create a catalog before you can create a new answer file. Adding a feature does not necessarily enable the feature. After you add a feature to your image, you may have to configure settings for the feature in order to enable them after. To enable lockdown features to work correctly, you must first add the Windows Foundation Page to your answer file, then enable the ISKU-Embedded-Features, then add individual lockdown components to the appropriate configuration pass of your image and configure them as desired.

See Add lockdown and branding features to your image by using Windows SIM for more information on how to use Windows SIM to add lockdown and branding features to your image.

Add lockdown features after OOBE by using Control Panel

After installation, you can add lockdown features to your image by using Turn Windows features on or off in the Control Panel. To learn more about adding lockdown features for a particular feature, see Lockdown features.

To turn lockdown features on or off by using Control Panel

  1. In Control Panel, click Programs and Features.

  2. In the Programs and Features window, click Turn Windows features on or off.
