VoIP Technology and Protocol Overview (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/5/2010

This section provides a brief introduction to Voice over IP (VoIP) concepts and to the protocols used by many VoIP phones, including those built using the VoIP technology in Windows Embedded CE.

The VoIP phone technology in Windows Embedded CE uses industry-standard protocols and telephony concepts.

In This Section

  • Circuit-Switched Networks
Introduces the telephony concepts of signaling and media transport and explains how traditional analog telephone networks implement this functionality.
  • Voice over IP Networks
Explains how VoIP phones and VoIP networks operate and how their implementation of signaling and media transport differs from that of an analog telephone network.
  • Session Initiation Protocol and SIP Servers
Provides an overview of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the industry-standard protocol used for signaling in VoIP networks. Also briefly discusses the different types of common SIP server functionality on a VoIP network.
  • Real-time Transport Protocol
Describes how VoIP networks transfer audio (and other media) between VoIP phones using the industry-standard Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).
  • Gateway Servers in VoIP Networks
Explains briefly how gateway servers can enable VoIP phones to interact with analog phones on a traditional telephone network.
