Remote System Information (Compact 2013)

3/26/2014

This tool displays information about the properties and system settings of devices.

How to Use

To use Remote System Information:

  • Do one of the following:

    • You can access the Remote System Information tool from the Start menu. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft Remote System Information.
    • In Platform Builder, on the Target menu, point to Remote Tools, and then click System Information.

When the tool loads, the system summary node is read. Other nodes are not read until they are clicked on, or until the node is refreshed.

Nodes fall into one of the following three categories:

  • System nodes - contain general system information
  • User interface nodes - contain information about the device UI
  • Security nodes - contain device policies

Each of these categories has nodes below it that contain information about the device.

Although the connection to the device is active, the data is read only when a node is refreshed. You can refresh the node either using the node context menu, or through the View menu. Refreshing a category refreshes all the nodes below it.

Graphical Data

Some nodes contain numerical data, such as memory and battery power. This data is represented as colored pie charts. Data also may appear as a table that contains description and value pairs.

Device Orientation

The device screen mode, whether landscape or portrait, is shown as part of the UI as device metrics. The measurements of the device and the interface itself are listed in pixels.

Orientation is synchronized with the device, so changing either the device or the Remote System Information view updates the other.

Remarks

With Remote System Information, you can explore the remote system properties, such as UI components, device specifications and settings, and security configuration. These are displayed using a UI that is similar to Windows Explorer. You can access both physical and emulated devices connected to your computer in real-time live connections, or you can access information that was previously saved.
