Definition of Server Appliance

An appliance is a computer system that is designed to perform a specific task. The computer system is a sealed, fixed-function unit much like a household appliance; for example, an oven or refrigerator. The manufacturer typically helps ensure the correct and continued operation of the appliance by providing software updates.

Server Appliance

An appliance that is designed with a server role as its primary function is called a server appliance. Given its server role, a server appliance provides services or data to either hardware or software clients. Examples of server appliances include a storage server that provides disk storage and backup services, or a set-top box that provides media services and content.
