Package Removal From Server Core

6/22/2010

For a server appliance based on Server Core, you can remove installation packages to restrict the changes that Administrators or users can make to optional features and server roles after the appliance is deployed.

Removing the packages for optional features and server roles prevents them from being enabled on the server appliance. For example, if installing Internet Information Services (IIS) would create conflicts with applications on your server appliance, you can remove the IIS package from Server Core to ensure that the IIS package cannot be installed after the appliance is deployed.

You can also remove packages to help minimize the disk space that the server appliance requires.

The steps for removing packages from Server Core for Windows Server 2008 R2 differ from the steps used to remove packages in Server Core for Windows Server 2008. The effect is the same. Disk space is freed; however, there is no way to reinstall the removed packages.
