Important

Windows Defender is not an antivirus solution. To protect your computer from malicious software, you should also run antivirus software.

If you decide to use Windows Defender on your device, make sure that you add the Windows Update packages to your image and enable them (for more information, see Add Updates to an Image). Turning on Windows Update enables Windows Defender to receive the latest signature updates from Windows Update and provides maximum protection for the device.

On devices that use File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) or Enhanced Write Filter with HORM to protect volumes, folders, or files, any definition updates downloaded by Windows Defender might not be persisted after a system restart.

If you are not going to use Windows Update on Windows Embedded Standard 7 but still need to use Windows Defender, make sure that you understand the risks related to having outdated Windows Defender signatures. Not having signature updates for Windows Defender will lead to users seeing pop-up windows that warn them about having old signatures. You might need to use the Dialog Box Filter on some types of devices to suppress those dialogs (for more information, see Add Message Blockers).
