Create an Answer File in Image Configuration Editor (Standard 7 SP1)

7/8/2014

You create an answer file in Image Configuration Editor to capture the specifications for an image you are developing. Later, you use the answer file to build the image to your specifications. Image Configuration Editor captures the features, drivers, languages and other settings that you select during image development into the answer file.

Hardware and Software Assumptions

  • You have installed Windows Embedded Standard 7 Toolkit on a development computer.

To create an answer file in Image Configuration Editor

  1. On your development computer, in Image Configuration Editor, on the File menu, select Select Distribution Share.

  2. In the Select a Distribution Share window, do the following:

    • To develop an image for a 32-bit device, open the 32-bit distribution share on the development computer. The default location for the 32-bit distribution share on a 32-bit development computer is <system_drive>:\Program Files\Windows Embedded Standard 7\DS.
    • To develop an image for a 64-bit device, open the 64-bit distribution share on the development computer. The default location for the 64-bit distribution share on a 32-bit development computer is <system_drive>:\Program Files\Windows Embedded Standard 7\DS64.
  3. After you can see the folders $OEM$ Folders, Out-of-box Drivers, and Packages, click Open.

The distribution share opens, and in the Distribution Share pane, you see the folders in the distribution share.

  4. On the File menu, select New Answer File.

The answer file opens, and in the Answer File pane, you see the Windows Embedded Core package is already included in the package.

Note

Image Configuration Editor automatically adds the Windows Embedded Core to every new answer file. The Windows Embedded Core contains the essential, basic functionality required in every image. For more information, see Embedded Core (eCore)

Next Steps

After you create an answer file by using Image Configuration Editor, the next step is to add drivers to the answer file by importing a PQM file. For more information, see Import a .pmq File into Image Configuration Editor.
