Start Image Builder Wizard on a Device (Standard 7 SP1)

7/8/2014

The Image Builder Wizard is a tool that you can use to create, configure, and install a Windows Embedded Standard 7 image on your device. Image Builder Wizard runs directly on your target device as it guides you through a set of configuration choices. After you make your selections, the wizard creates and installs a Standard 7 installation onto your device. You can then further customize this installation, or you can capture it to an image file and deploy it.

If your test device has a DVD-ROM drive, you can start Image Builder Wizard by using the Standard 7 DVD that is appropriate for the device architecture—32-bit or 64-bit. If your device does not have a DVD-ROM drive, you can create other bootable media and use it to start Image Builder Wizard on your device.

You can automatically update your installation of Image Builder Wizard from the Windows Embedded Developer Update website. For more information, see the WEDU website.

You can also develop an image by using Image Configuration Editor. For more information, see Build an Answer File Using Image Configuration Editor.

Hardware and Software Assumptions

  • You have a reference device that meets the Requirements for an Embedded Device.

  • You have a bootable utility disk for the Image Builder Wizard that is appropriate for the architecture of the reference device. See Create a Bootable USB Flash Drive.

  • If your device does not have a DVD-ROM drive, you have stored copies of the Standard 7 tools and distribution shares (DS) that are appropriate to the architecture of the target device, saving the copies to a USB flash drive (UFD) or to a network location.

    Warning

If you specify a disk configuration in your answer file and also set the WillShowUI parameter to WillShowUI=Always, you may receive an error message. To work around this error message, set the WillShowUI parameter to WillShowUI=Never.

To start Image Builder Wizard by using the Windows Embedded Standard 7 DVD

  1. Turn on the device.

  2. On the device, insert into the DVD drive the Standard 7 product DVD that is appropriate to the architecture of the reference device.

  3. Turn off the device.

  4. Start the device again into Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 3.0 by using the Standard 7 product DVD.

  5. Image Builder Wizard starts automatically.

  6. Image Builder Wizard starts and guides you through how to configure an image. Image Builder Wizard builds the image and installs it on the device.

To start Image Builder Wizard by using a bootable utility CD-ROM

  1. Turn on the device.

  2. On the device, insert the bootable utility CD-ROM.

  3. Turn off the device.

  4. Start the device again into Windows PE by using the bootable utility CD-ROM.

  5. Prepare access to the Standard 7 distribution share (DS) and tools.

    1. If the DS and tools are stored on a USB flash drive, insert the UFD into the device.

    2. If the DS and tools are on the network, map a drive to the network share.

      Note

Paths to distribution shares that are greater than 90 characters may result in failures because the value of Windows max_path is exceeded. These failures can be difficult to troubleshoot; so try to use short paths and mappings to avoid this problem.

  6. At the command prompt on the device, type the following to start Image Builder, replacing <network_drive> with the letter of your mapped network drive.

                                    <network_drive>:\setup.exe

Image Builder Wizard starts and guides you through how to configure an image. Image Builder Wizard builds the image and installs it on the device.

To start Image Builder Wizard by using a bootable utility UFD

  1. On the device, insert the bootable utility UFD.

  2. Start the device into Windows PE by using the bootable utility UFD.

  3. Prepare access to the Standard 7 distribution share (DS) and tools.

If the DS and tools are stored on a USB flash drive (UFD), insert that UFD into the device.
