Add Updates to an Answer File using Image Configuration Editor (Standard 7 SP1)

It is important to keep your answer file up-to-date with the latest hardware driver and software updates. Using Windows Embedded Standard 7, you have the option to manually select which updates you want to install to your answer file, or you can have Standard 7 install all applicable updates to your answer file.

Note

The Standard 7 setup process performs several verifications, which rely on the target device's date and time settings. For optimal performance, confirm that the target device is set to the correct date and time.

Hardware and Software Assumptions

To manually select and add updates to an answer file using Image Configuration Editor (ICE)

  1. On your development computer, in the Answer File pane in Image Configuration Editor, right-click Right click to create or open an answer file, and then select New Answer File.

    The Standard 7 setup process performs several verifications, which rely on the target device's date and time settings. For optimal performance, confirm that the target device is set to the correct date and time.

  2. Click the File menu, click Import, and then click Import Package(s)….

  3. Navigate to the update(s) that you have downloaded, and then click the Open button. Image Configuration Editor adds any updates found to the DS in an Update sub-folder.

    Note

    Update files have a file type of either .msu or .cab.

  4. From the Update sub-folder, right-click the update that you want to add to the answer file, and then click Add to Answer File.Image Configuration Editor adds the update to the answer file in an Update sub-folder.

  5. Repeat step 4 as necessary.

  6. Click the File menu, and then click Save Answer File.

To automatically select and add updates to an answer file using Image Configuration Editor (ICE)

The Standard 7 setup process performs several verifications, which rely on the target device's date and time settings. For optimal performance, confirm that the target device is set to the correct date and time.

  1. On your development computer in Image Configuration Editor, click File, and then click Select Distribution Share.

    Navigate to the distribution share (DS) that contains the update(s) that you have downloaded, and then click the Open button.

  2. In the Answer File pane, right-click Right click to create or open an answer file and then select Open Answer File….

  3. From the Validate menu, click Add Applicable Updates.Image Configuration Editor adds any applicable updates to the answer file in an Update sub-folder.

    Note

    When calculating the update count, only updates of the types Update and HotFix are counted. Many updates are of the type SecurityUpdate and will not be included in the update count.

  4. Click the File menu, and then click Save Answer File.
