The Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) provides support for the background transfer of data and resumption of transfers after a network interruption or restart of the operating system. It supports SMB, HTTP, and FTP protocols.

Allow Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to monitor network traffic at Internet Gateway Device (IGD) and use only the idle portion of the network bandwith. Your IGD has to support byte counter and UPnP must be enabled.

Common Uses

Microsoft Update uses BITS to download updates.

Custom applications can use the BITS application programming interface to provide background data transfers when exchanging files or as part of a specialized update schema.

Notes

Devices that use BITS to download data will not persist that data if they also use Enhanced Write Filter with HORM (EWF) or File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) to control write access to storage media.
