Link Layer Topology Discovery (Compact 2013)

3/26/2014

Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) is a link layer protocol that you can use to discover devices on your local network. The protocol operates over both wired (802.3) and wireless (802.11) networks.

Note   In Windows Embedded Compact 2013, only the Responder component is available. A Mapper component is not included.

The Responder answers a request and sends its host address together with other network information, such as the Media Access Control (MAC) address and IP address.

Although the LLTD Mapper is preinstalled on Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, the Responder must be present on a device for it to be detected and appear on the network map. The Responder can be added to the Windows Embedded Compact image by using the sysgen variable SYSGEN_LLTD_RESPONDER. The responder is also available as a downloadable component for Window XP. It supports only IP4.

To add this feature to your OS, see Link Layer Topology Discovery Catalog Items and Sysgen Variables.
