Select an Activation Method (Standard 8)

7/8/2014

Review the available activation methods for your Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) device.

Because all Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) images must be activated, the deciding factors in how and when to activate an image are usually what kind of Internet connection your device has available and the needs and expectations of the final customer. The first factor in deciding how to activate your Standard 8 device is to determine what type of Internet connection is available to your device.

  • No network connectivity
Situations in which there is no network connectivity include the following: the device has no networking capability, the factory has no Internet connectivity, or the device cannot be connected to a network because of security considerations.
  • Internet via proxy tool
In these situations, a device may have access to a private network but no access directly to the Internet. Proxy servers are often used in this case to complete the activation process between the device on the private network and the Microsoft activation servers on the public network.
  • Internet directly
In this situation, a device has access to a public network so it can directly contact the Microsoft activation servers to complete the activation process.

The following table summarizes the activation method options according to Internet connectivity status.
