SNMP uses three separate formats to convey management information:

  • Structure of Management Information (SMI). SMI contains a set of rules that outline how to create a MIB and how to define managed objects that are accessed through the SNMP protocol. SMI is defined in RFC 1155, RFC 1212, and RFC 1215.
  • Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1). ASN.1 defines the format of SNMP messages and managed objects by using an unambiguous data description format that is human as well as machine readable.
  • Basic Encoding Rules (BER). BER is used to encode SNMP into a format that is suitable for transmission across a network.
