Testing the IP Phone

After downloading the image to the CEPC or to the Emulator, you are ready to test your IP phone. As soon as the image download is complete, you will hear a dial tone. The dial tone will continue until you type and confirm the personal identification number (PIN), and start dialing a phone number or URI.

If you are using a SIP server, you can dial the fully qualified URI or the telephone number of the IP phone that you are calling. If you are not using a SIP server and you used a fake URI and SIP server address in the Provisioning.xml, you must dial the IP address of the IP phone that you are calling.

To test the IP phones

  1. Type a 4 digit PIN and choose Done.

This PIN protects the user data on the phone. You need to use this PIN to change phone settings.

    - or -

Leave the field blank and choose Done.

This clears the PIN setting and allows any user to change the phone settings.

  2. If you typed a PIN in step 1, confirm the PIN and choose Done.

  3. If you are using a SIP server dial the URI of the phone that you want to call.

Depending on the SIP server setup, you may have to dial the fully qualified URI of the IP phone, such as someone@example.com, instead of a phone number.

    - or-

If you are not using a SIP server, dial the IP address of the IP phone that you are calling.

Note   To determine the IP address of the IP phone that you created using Platform Builder, in the Target Control window, type s ipconfig /d. The Debug output window displays the IP address of the device.

You can also test the IP phone by calling a Windows Messenger client. For more information, see How to Use the IP Phone to Call Windows Messenger.

Emulator User's Guide

The following list shows some helpful tips for the Emulator IP phone.

  • The Emulator phone can be very slow to take user input when typing the URI; this depends on your PC. As soon as the phone recognizes a valid entry, it starts to dial, even before you choose the Dial button. If you need to dial a fully qualified URI, you may have to try a few times before you can make a successful call.

  • Use the PC keyboard if you need to type a fully qualified URI. If you use the keypad on the Emulator, use the asterisk (*) button to enter special symbols, such as the at sign (@).

  • You need the PIN to change the phone settings. When the Emulator phone finishes downloading the image, you need to type a 4 digit PIN.

If you do not want to use a PIN number, you can leave the field empty and press ENTER. This clears the PIN setting and allows any user to change the phone settings.

  • When making a phone call and using the Emulator keypad, you can use the Change Input button to toggle among three types of input. A small icon on the lower right side of the status box indicates the type of input. You will see 123, abc, and ABC. When you use the PC keyboard, make sure that the status shows 123. Otherwise, you will not see the characters you typed.
