Installing the Remote Boot Service
The Remote Boot service is an implementation of Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) that allows a client device to boot using a downloaded image. With this service, you can boot an image on a client device without requiring the client device to have a persistent storage device, such as a hard drive or flash RAM memory.
To install the remote boot server
Prepare your server operating system in accordance with the minimum requirements specified by the Windows XP Embedded release notes.
Note The Remote Boot service should not be installed on a Windows-based client operating system, such as Windows 2000 professional, Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Professional. It should be installed on any Windows-based server OS like Windows 2000 Server Service Pack (SP) 2 or later. You must also install the Windows Script Host 5.6 before installing the Remote Boot service. For instructions about installing Windows Script Host 5.6, see the release notes.
Insert Microsoft Windows XP Embedded Disk 1 into the CD-ROM drive of the server.
From the Windows XP Embedded Installer window, choose Remote Boot Setup.
In the Setup Wizard, choose Next.
Read the agreement. If you do not agree to the terms of the license agreement, choose I do not accept the terms in the license agreement, and then choose Cancel to exit the installation.

If you agree to the terms of the license agreement, choose I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then choose Next.
The Customer Information page appears.
Type the following information:
Your name
The name of your company
The Tools Product Key
A 25-character key that is included on the orange Product Key sticker on the back of the Windows XP Embedded media package. Do not use the Runtime Product Key. For more information, see "Licensing a Run-Time Image" in the Windows Embedded Studio Help.
Note The Tools Product Key is not the Product ID (PID). The PID is used when contacting Microsoft Product Support Services.
For evaluation versions of Windows XP Embedded, Product Keys can be obtained from the Windows Embedded Evaluation Kit Registration site. Evaluation versions requested from Microsoft include the Product Key with the order confirmation.
Choose Next.
From the Setup Type page, choose either the Typical or Custom option, and then choose Next.
**Note **If you choose the Custom option, you are presented with the option to install the PXE boot service, TFTP service, or both. If you choose to install the PXE boot service, you are then able to specify the location of the TFTP server. If you choose to install the TFTP service, you are then able to specify the file path for the TFTP server to use when obtaining files.
The TFTP server can only be installed on a server running Windows 2000 Server operating system.
From the Final Setup window, choose Install.
**Note **Installation of the Remote Boot service does not result in the installation of DHCP, which must be installed separately on the server.
You cannot install Remote Installation Service (RIS) and Remote Boot service on the same computer. RIS and Remote Boot bind to the same port and use the same protocol to provide different services. If they exist on separate machines on the same network they must be configured to avoid race conditions when responding to client requests.
