Development Tools Fail to Connect to a Local Database

Description

You installed the Windows® Embedded Studio for Windows XP Embedded development tools and component database on a single computer, and Target Designer or Component Database Manager fails to connect to the database on that computer. If Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) was previously installed, the Setup Wizard may have installed with the security set to SQL Server Authentication mode rather than mixed-mode authentication.

Resolution

If you installed SQL Server 2000 as your database engine, verify that SQL Server Authentication is set to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode.

**Note   **If you install MSDE from the Windows XP Embedded product media, the setting is accurate.

If you installed SQL Server 2005 as your database engine, change the default instance name of SQL Express 2005 to MSSQLSERVER during setup to ensure that the installed embedded studio tools work with the database.
