System Center Essentials Management Licenses

System Center Essentials is a server technology that is included in Windows EBS. System Center Essentials requires management licenses (MLs) to manage the servers and computers in the Windows EBS domain:

  • Server MLs are required to manage computers that are running server operating systems.

  • Client MLs are required to manage your domain-joined client computers.

The System Center Essentials MLs are different from the Windows EBS client access licenses (CALs). They are not monitored by Windows EBS, and you do not manage them in the Windows EBS Administration Console.

By default, a purchase of Windows EBS includes sufficient System Center Essentials server MLs to manage all of the servers that are running the Windows EBS technologies, plus managing ten additional server operating systems. In addition, one client ML is included with each Windows EBS client access license (CAL) that you purchase. In most cases you do not need to purchase additional client MLs for use in Windows EBS. However, you can purchase additional System Center Essentials server MLs, up to the limit of 30 server MLs for Windows EBS.

For more information about the MLs for System Center Essentials, see the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=123232).
