Using Performance Counters

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

RMS includes several sets of performance objects and counters that you can use in System Monitor to monitor the activity of RMS. The performance counters are specific to each of the RMS performance objects and include the following objects:

  • RMS: ActivationProxy performance counters for activation proxy requests

  • RMS: Certification performance counters for account certification requests

  • RMS: DirectoryServices performance counters for Active Directory lookups

  • RMS: Enrollment performance counters for sub-enrollment requests

  • RMS: Licensing performance counters for publishing and use license requests

  • RMS: Logging performance counters for logging activity

These performance counters are automatically installed during provisioning, but you must add the counters to the log to initiate monitoring.

To add a performance counter:

  1. From the Start menu, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Performance.

  2. In the Performance dialog box, right-click a blank area in the details pane, and then click Add Counters.

  3. In the Add Counters dialog box, in the Performance object list, select the counter that you want to add, and then click Add.

You can use the Performance Logs and Alerts options, available in the Performance dialog box, to monitor and manage log files. For more information about each of the performance counters that are available in RMS, see “RMS Performance Counters” later in this subject. For general information about performance counters, see the System Monitor Help.
