Troubleshooting installation problems

This topic provides guidelines for solving problems associated with installing new Message Queuing software or running Message Queuing Setup.

When encountering installation problems, always inspect the setup log files first. This is especially important when you perform an unattended setup, because you will not know if something went wrong. The Message Queuing setup log file, Msmqinst.log, is located in the Windows folder. If this file does not identify the problem, look at the Windows Server 2003 family setup log file, Setuperr.log, which is located in the Windows folder (typically C:\Windows).

What problem are you having?

  • You have been prompted for the name of a server during Message Queuing Setup in a Windows Server 2003 family enterprise.

  • You receive a "Message Queuing application is running" error while uninstalling Message Queuing.

  • You are installing a Message Queuing computer as a dependent client and cannot configure a supporting server for it.

To install Message Queuing servers with Routing Support on nondomain controllers, you need to have enterprise administrative permissions.

Solution:  Verify that you are logged on with the proper permissions for the computer you want to install Message Queuing on.
