ATM Technical Reference

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) refers to a number of related technologies, including software, hardware, and connection media. ATM is specifically designed to support high-speed communication. ATM differs from other existing LAN and WAN technologies by allowing networks to use bandwidth resources at maximum efficiency while maintaining Quality of Service (QoS) for users and programs.

The basic components of ATM are the computers that are connected to the ATM network and the devices that both connect these computers and ensure that data is transferred successfully. The computers that are connected to the ATM network are called endstations*.* Routers, Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAM) and ATM switches are examples of devices that connect end stations and ensure that data is transferred successfully.
