Upgrade overview

This topic provides an overview of upgrading from MSMQ 1.0 on Windows NT Server 4.0 computers, and from Message Queuing 2.0, which runs on Windows 2000, to Message Queuing 3.0.

Upgrading from MSMQ 2.0 on Windows 2000 computers

MSMQ 2.0, running on a Windows 2000 computer will automatically be updated to Message Queuing 3.0 during the upgrade to a Windows Server 2003 family operating system.

Upgrading from MSMQ 1.0 on Windows NT 4.0 computers

For computers running Windows NT Server 4.0, the Message Queuing software is also automatically upgraded to Message Queuing 3.0, with the exception of MSMQ 1.0 controller servers. Message Queuing is upgraded for controller servers using the Message Queuing migration tool. The upgrade entails upgrading MSMQ 1.0 controller servers, and migrating all the information stored in the MQIS database to Active Directory. After the upgrade, PECs will be upgraded to a Windows Server 2003 family operating system, promoted to domain controllers, and running Message Queuing 3.0. Other MSMQ 1.0 controller servers will be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 family computers, running as Message Queuing 3.0 routing servers.

Note that mixed-mode operation is not permitted in Message Queuing 3.0. In other words, a configuration of MSMQ 1.0 controller servers running on Windows NT 4.0 computers, together with Message Queuing domain controllers in a Windows Server 2003 domain environment, is not supported.

For more information on this upgrade scenario, see the white paper at Microsoft Message Queuing(https://www.microsoft.com/).
