Event ID 12309 — FSRM Import-Export and Configuration File Integrity
Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2
File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) includes command-line tools (Dirquota.exe, Filescrn.exe) that you can use for copying quota and file screen template settings from one computer to another. These command-line tools create import-export files in XML format. If one of these files becomes corrupted, File Server Resource Manager cannot import the file.
Also, File Server Resource Manager stores several configuration files in the System Volume Information folder of each volume that it manages. If any of those configuration files becomes corrupted, File Server Resource Manager will not be able to function properly.

Message: | A File Server Resource Manager configuration file or import-export file is corrupted. If the corrupt file is a configuration file, it is required that the system or volume be restored from backup. If the file is an import-export file, export the items again and retry the operation without editing the file contents. %1 |
Resolve
Create a new file or restore volume configuration from a recent backup
If the error condition was reported after a failed import attempt of a quota or file screen template import-export file, then you will need to create the file again and use the new file to retry the import. For more information, see the section titled "Create a new template configuration file."
If you did not attempt an import of a quota or file screen template import-export file before the error condition was reported, then the problem was caused by a corrupted File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) configuration file. In this case, the File Server Resource Manager configuration files need to be restored from a recent backup. For more information, see the section titled "Restore FSRM configuration from backup."
Create a new template configuration file
To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.
To create a file with quota or file screen template configuration from a computer running File Server Resource Manager:
Open an elevated command prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
To export quota template configuration, type **dirquota template export /file:**file_name /template:"template_name", and then press ENTER (where file_name is the name that you want to give the import-export file, and template_name is the name of the template that you want to export). For example:
dirquota template export /file:C:\qexport.xml /template:"1 GB Limit"
--Or--
To export file screen template configuration, type **filescrn template export /file:**file_name /template:"template_name", and then press ENTER (where file_name is the name that you want to give the import-export file, and template_name is the name of the template that you want to export). For example:
filescrn template export /file:C:\texport.xml /template:"Monitor MP3 Files"
Note: If you do not use the /template: option to name a template to export, configuration information for all quota or file screen templates in File Server Resource Manager are exported.
Restore File Server Resource Manager configuration from backup
Use your backup application to restore the information in the System Volume Information folder of each volume that is managed by File Server Resource Manager. If you are unable to restore the volume configuration from a recent backup, or if restoring the volume configuration does not solve the problem, then the File Server Resource Manager configuration files that are stored in the System Volume Information folders of the volumes managed by File Server Resource Manager need to be deleted and created again.
Caution: Deleting the File Server Resource Manager configuration files that are stored in the System Volume Information folder of the volumes managed by File Server Resource Manager is a complex troubleshooting procedure that could jeopardize the integrity of other important configuration files stored in these folders. For this reason, this troubleshooting task requires assistance from Customer Support Services (CSS). For information about how to contact CSS, see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89446.
Verify
To verify that a quota or file screen template import-export file is not corrupted, try to import the file. For more information, see the section titled "Import a template configuration file." To verify that the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) configuration files are not corrupted, review quota and file screening configuration in File Server Resource Manager. For more infomation, see the section titled "Review quota and file screening configuration."
Import a template configuration file
To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.
To import a template configuraiton file:
Open an elevated command prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
To import a quota template configuration file, type **dirquota template import /file:**file_name /template:"template_name", and then press ENTER (where file_name is the name of the import-export file that you want to verify, and template_name is the name of the template that you want to import). For example:
dirquota template import /file:C:\qexport.xml /template:"1 GB Limit"
--Or--
To import a file screen template configuration file, type **filescrn template import /file:**file_name /template:"template_name", and then press ENTER (where file_name is the name of the import-export file that you want to verify, and template_name is the name of the template that you want to import). For example:
filescrn template import /file:C:\texport.xml /template:"Monitor MP3 Files"
Note: If you do not use the /template: option to name a template to import, configuration information for all quota or file screen templates in the import-export file are imported.
The template configuration file is not corrupted if the file is imported without errors, or if you see the following message alerting you that you attempted to import a template that already exists:
The specified object already exists.
Review quota and file screening configuration
To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.
To review the current quota and file screening configuration:
- Open File Server Resource Manager. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click File Server Resource Manager.
- To review quota configuration, in the console tree, expand the Quota Management node, and then click Quotas. The results pane will show all configured quotas. To see detailed information for a quota, right-click that quota and then click Edit Quota Properties. If limit and threshold configuration is available and correct, the File Server Resource Manager configuration file is not corrupted.
- To review file screening configuration, in the console tree, expand the File Screening Management node, and then click File Screens. The results pane will show all configured file screens. To see detailed information for a file screen, right-click that file screen and then click Edit File Screen Properties. If the correct file groups are selected and notification configuration is available and correct, the File Server Resource Manager configuration file is not corrupted.
