Graphic Design Institute needs to provide remote access to its students, so they can access their course applications and desktop from their dorm rooms. Students will use their own personal computers to access their course desktop and expect a rich media experience so that they can access Flash and Silverlight over the remote connection. Students also need to be able to print and use their personal USB devices with their course desktop.

The Graphic Design Institute IT administrator has heard of Microsoft® RemoteFX™, a new feature of Remote Desktop Services. IT administrators can use it to deliver a rich end user experience to employees who are using virtualized or session-based desktops. Using new protocol enhancements between Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows 7 Enterprise with Service Pack 1 (SP1), users can access virtual desktops from a wide variety of endpoint devices and still get a media-rich user experience with server-side graphics processing and support for USB peripherals. However the Graphic Design Institute IT administrator has also heard that RemoteFX is optimized for LAN environments and he is concerned that the typical network conditions that students connect over to the Institutes centralized desktop system will be insufficient to use RemoteFX.

The admin reviews the RemoteFX partner site https://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/rds-partners.aspx and discovers a Microsoft partner that has developed a solution to leverage RemoteFX over WAN bandwidth. The admin follows up with this partner to develop a design to integrate the partner solution into the RemoteFX deployment.
