Downloading and Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
It is recommended that you read this document and then complete the instructions for how to download and then install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
The download for Windows SBS SP1 includes the service packs necessary for the Standard Edition of Windows SBS 2003. As a part of this process, you must download five separate files, which could take a considerable amount of time depending upon the speed of your Internet connection. If any of service packs 1-4 are already installed, it is not necessary to do so again.
Before you install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
- Create a shortcut to this Web page on your Windows desktop. The shortcut will enable you to quickly access this information after the computer restarts, or if your browser is closed.
- Review the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Upgrade Best Practices (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=47031). The document recommends tasks that you should complete, such as disabling anti-virus software, before you begin an upgrade.
- Read the release notes (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=41392). These notes contain information that was not available when these instructions were written.
- This service pack cannot be uninstalled. Before installing Service Pack 1 for Windows SBS, we strongly recommend that you perform a complete backup of your existing Windows SBS installation. For information about how to back up your server, see "Setup Best Practices" at the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=44619).
How to Install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
To successfully install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1, you must install all five updates listed in these instructions. Additionally, the updates must be installed in the sequence listed. To install each update, click the corresponding link on the Setup page, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
Restart the computer when you are prompted to do so.
Note
To install these updates, you must be logged on as an Administrator or as a member of the Domain Admins security group.
Note
If one or more of the listed updates is already installed, you can skip to the next step.
Note
It can take up to two hours to install these updates completely. Because your input is required during the installation process, be sure to schedule enough time to complete all of the steps. If you are performing other tasks while Setup is running, be sure to check back often to determine whether your input is needed.
Setup Instructions
Perform the following steps to install the latest service packs and updates for Windows Small Business Server 2003. Complete the steps in the sequence listed.
Note
If one or more of the listed components is already installed, you can skip to the next step.

Be sure to allocate adequate time. As a part of this process, you must download five separate files, which could take a considerable amount of time depending upon the speed of your Internet connection.

Because user input is required during the installation process, be sure to schedule enough time to complete all of the steps. If you find it necessary to perform other tasks while Setup is running, be sure to check back often to determine if your input is needed.
Step One: Download the updates
On the computer running Windows SBS, create a folder named SP1 on your local hard disk.
Download and save the following updates into the SP1 folder:

If you have already obtained Windows XP SP2, it is not necessary to download Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment. Alternately, follow the steps outlined in the following KB articles:

Step Two: Install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click WindowsServer2003-KB889101-SP1-x86-ENU.exe.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Note
When the Service Pack 1 Setup dialog box appears informing you that Setup will automatically stop and then restart the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), click Continue.
- Allow the computer to automatically restart.
Step Three: Install Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click WSS2003SP1-kb841876-fullfile-enu.exe.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Step Four: Install Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click E3SP1ENG.exe.
In the Choose Directory for Extracted Files dialog box, click Ok.
When the self-extraction process is complete, click OK.
In Windows Explorer, double click the E3SP1ENG folder, double-click the setup folder, and then double-click the i386 folder.
Double-click Update.exe, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
Step Five: Install Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click SBS2003-KB891193-X86-ENU.EXE.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Note
Perform this step only if you have not already installed Updates KB872769 and KB884032.
Step Six: Install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation
Allow the computer to automatically restart.
Note
If you used the Set Up Client Applications Wizard to add to the list of applications that can be deployed to client computers, the additional applications are removed from the list when you upgrade to Windows SBS SP1. To resolve this issue, run the Set Up Client Applications Wizard and add the applications to the list again.
Note
If you used the Monitoring Configuration Wizard to configure status reports or usage reports before applying Windows SBS SP1, ensure that the SQLAgent$SBSMONITORING service Startup Type is set to Automatic, and that the service is started. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then type Services.msc. Right-click SQLAgent$SBSMONITORING, and then click Properties. On the General tab, select Automatic for the Startup Type. If the SQLAgent$SBSMONITORING service is not started, click Start.
