To join your computer to the Windows Small Business Server network
Log on to your computer by using your current user name and password.
When you join your computer to the network, your computer will join a new computer domain. Ensure that your computer is enabled to update its DNS suffix when it joins the new domain. For more information, see How do I enable the computer to update the DNS suffix when it changes its domain membership?
Open an Internet browser, such as the Microsoft Internet Explorer® Internet browser.
In the address bar, type https://Connect, and then press ENTER.
The Welcome to the Windows Small Business Server 2008 page appears. Click Start Connect Computer program.
In the file download security warning message (see Figure 1), click Run.
If the User Account Control message appears, either click Continue (see Figure 2), or type your user name and password (see Figure 3).
On the Choose how to set up this computer page, click Set up this computer for myself.
The Connect Computer Wizard appears. Follow the instructions in the wizard to join your computer to the network. On the Enter your new user name and password page, type the user name and password for your new computer network, which are provided to you by your network administrator.
Note
If you are the network administrator, you can obtain a printed copy of the instructions to join a computer to a network along with the user name and password for any user account, by clicking Print the Getting Started page for this user account on the Users tab of the Windows SBS Console.
Important
You should change your password the first time you log on to the Windows SBS 2008 network. You need to protect your new password, so do not write it down.
If you have documents, pictures, or personal preferences (such as desktop backgrounds, screen savers, or Internet Explorer favorites) that you want to keep after you join your computer to the new network, on the Move existing user data and settings page of the wizard (see Figure 4), choose your current user profile from the drop-down list.
Follow the remaining instructions in the wizard to join your computer to the network.
After you join your computer to the network, start using your new user name and password to log on to your computer.
