Get Dialog Box (Explorer and Plug-in)

Retrieves a read-only copy of the selected item from the database to your working folder. You can also specify a different folder to contain the retrieved item(s).

Dialog Box Access

In Visual SourceSafe Explorer, on the Versions menu, click Get Latest Version. If you want to retrieve an older version of the file or project, you can click Get in the History of < name> dialog box.

Note

You can specify whether the Get dialog box is displayed by using the Command Dialogs tab in the SourceSafe Options dialog box.

In Visual Studio, on the File menu, click Source Control, then Get.

  • Advanced
    Displays the advanced options Set file time and Replace writable. You can set defaults for the advanced options on the Local Files tab in the SourceSafe Options dialog box.
  • Browse
    Allows you to navigate to a folder.
  • Build tree (override working folders)
    Projects only. Overrides the working folders for the subprojects in a recursive operation and builds a project tree on your local computer that mirrors the database project organization. Working folder settings for individual subprojects are ignored. This option is available only when you select the Recursive check box.
  • Make writable
    Removes the read-only attribute from the files after they are retrieved.
  • OK
    Performs the get operation.
  • Only show this dialog when the Shift key is down
    Specifies that this dialog box is not displayed unless you hold down the SHIFT key when you select the Get Latest Version command.
  • Recursive
    Projects only. Gets the project and all subprojects. Each file in a subproject is copied into its own working folder, which can be a folder anywhere on your computer or an accessible remote computer. To override the working folder settings and create a folder structure that mirrors the database project structure, use the Build tree option.

  • Replace writable
    Advanced option. Specifies the effect of the get operation on the writable files in your working folder. Possible options are:

    Default

    Uses the Visual SourceSafe default, which is Ask.

    Ask

    Prompts for each file that corresponds to a writable file on your local disk.

    Replace

    Replaces local writable files with those retrieved from the database. If a selected file is checked out, choosing this option is not recommended.

    Skip

    Does not retrieve database files corresponding to local writable files.

    Merge

    Merges the local and database file versions. This option is useful when you want to ensure that you are getting changes from other users and you have the file checked out. If you have this option set and don't have the file checked out, Visual SourceSafe automatically treats the file as if you had the Skip option set.

  • Set file time
    Advanced option. Associates a time with the get operation. Possible options are:

    Default

    Uses the default setting for the database. This setting is made on the Local Files tab of the SourceSafe Options dialog box.

    Current

    Specifies the current date and time.

    Modification

    Specifies the date and time when the item was last saved.

    Check In

    Specifies the date and time of check-in.
  • To
    Shows the file and folder to which the file is retrieved. By default, the file is retrieved to your working folder, with the same name as it has in the database. However, you can type a different folder and file name, or use the Browse button.

  • Columns
    Identifies columns to display and the order in which they are displayed.
  • Compare Versions
    Opens the Difference Options dialog box or the Project Difference dialog box, which allows you to compare a selected file with another file.
  • Flat View
    Displays the files you are retrieving as flat lists under their source control connection.
  • Name
    Displays the names of the items to retrieve. Items appear with the check boxes next to them selected. If you do not want to retrieve a particular item, clear its check box.
  • OK
    Performs the get operation.

  • Options
    Displays get options when the arrow to the right of the button is clicked. Possible options are:

    Option Description

    Refresh

    Refreshes the displayed list of items.

    Advanced

    Displays the Advanced Get Options dialog box to allow selection of advanced retrieval options.
  • Sort
    Changes the sort order of the displayed columns.
  • Tree View
    Displays the folder and file hierarchy for the items you are retrieving.
