How to deploy SDS for Insights

  1. To deploy SDS for Insights, log into the SDS main page.

  2. Select on Settings in the lower corner of the left side bar.

  3. On the Settings page, ensure that “Collect activity data for Insights” is enabled. It should be enabled by default.

  4. Under “Sync organizational data from SDS” to Education Insights Premium, select on the hyperlink “To continue set up and monitoring navigate to SDS for Insights.”

  5. Select on Turn On SDS for Insights.

    Allow 15 minutes for services to provision to tenant before next step.

    At this point, if you have not yet set up your SDS sync profiles, you should navigate to the sync dashboard in SDS and select on Add Profiles. Once you have configured SDS and created your profiles, navigate back to the SDS for Insights home page and continue following the instructions below.

  6. Once SDS for Insights has completed provisioning, you can navigate to the home screen where you'll start by connecting your institution’s data. Select on the Connect your data button.

  7. If you're setting up for the first time or transitioning to a new academic year, select on Create new incoming flow. In the future, you'll be able to edit an existing flow.

  8. Next, you need to choose your data source. This feature release only supports the ability to pull in data from your SDS sync profiles.

  9. Choose your current academic year and provide a friendly name, such as 2021 or 2020 – 2021. (Characters used must be utf8 or will be automatically stripped out).

    Next, enter dates for when your academic year starts and ends.

    Lastly, enter the date when SDS for Insights should stop syncing your data. It's most common to stop syncing data on the academic year end date you just entered.


    The stop syncing your data date will not impact your SDS sync profiles or any of the provisioning SDS does outside of supporting Education Insights Premium.

    The academic year has defined start and end dates, which assist Education Insights Premium to better understand organizational data changes over time.

  10. By default, all active and available SDS sync profiles are listed, and the default is selected with a blue check mark.

  • If you've more than one active SDS sync profile but don't want it to be included in the data that you want to send for the configured academic year, unselect the row. If you change your mind, you can use the Edit Incoming Flow option on the home page to add it later.

  • If you don't see an active SDS sync profile listed this means that it hasn't completed its first sync, therefore it isn't offered to select because the data isn't yet available. After checking on the status of the SDS sync profile, you can cancel the wizard (or continue and return later). Select Edit Incoming Flow from the Home page. When prompted, select the SDS sync profile to include the data on the next run and complete the wizard.

  1. Review source and options, and if everything looks correct, select the “Next” button. If not, you have the option to “Edit Source” and/or “Edit Options” before clicking "Next". Review and edit. Hold on. incoming flow created.

  2. Your first data flow is now pending. Check back in 6 hours. incoming data flow is pending.

  3. After allowing time for the first sync to complete, navigate back to SDS for Insights from the SDS Settings page. If there are no issues with your data, you'll be able to proceed with setting up your outbound flows.

  1. If there are issues with your data, you'll see “We found some issues with your data.” Select on Investigate Data Health to see more. We suggest you correct any errors before proceeding with enabling any data provisioning scenarios. Turning off SDS for Insights

If you no longer want to use SDS for Insights, navigate to the Settings icon in SDS for Insights.

Select on “Turn on/off Microsoft SDS for Insights” to launch the fly-out where you can toggle the status from On to Off. Select Save.


Turning off SDS for Insights will clear out all captured SIS / SMS organizational data that has been made available for Education Insights Premium. You can turn it back on, however you will need to start the onboarding process from the beginning.
