Jinja2 Prompt Templates are only supported in Python.
Semantic Kernel supports using the Jinja2 template syntax for prompts as of the Python SDK.
Jinja2 is a modern and designer-friendly templating language for Python, modeled after Django’s templates.
It is typically used for dynamic content generation, supporting advanced features such as variable substitution, control structures, and filters.
This article focuses on how to effectively use Jinja2 templates to generate prompts.
Installing Jinja2 Prompt Template Support
Jinja2 prompt template support is included as part of the Semantic Kernel Python library.
If you haven't already installed Semantic Kernel, you can do so with pip:
pip install semantic-kernel
How to use Jinja2 templates programmatically
The example below demonstrates how to create and use a chat prompt template with Jinja2 syntax in Python.
The template contains Jinja2 expressions (denoted by {{ ... }}
for variables and {% ... %}
for control structures). These are replaced with values from the input arguments at execution.
In this example, the prompt is dynamically constructed from a system message and the conversation history, similar to the Handlebars example.
The chat history is iterated using Jinja2's {% for %}
control structure.

How to use Jinja2 templates in YAML prompts
You can also create prompt functions from YAML files—this allows you to separate your prompt templates and configuration from your code.
