Registering a server in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) allows you to store server information for future connections.
There are two ways to register a server in SSMS.
- Open the Registered Servers tool window in SSMS to register servers
- Right-click on a connected server in Object Explorer and select Register...
Benefits of registered servers
Use Registered Servers to:
- Preserve server connection information.
- Quickly connect to Object Explorer and Query Editor for a registered server.
- Determine if a server is running.
- Easily open a multi-server query editor.
- Organize server information in groups.
- Provide a detailed description for a server groups.
- Provide user-friendly names for servers.
- Provide detailed descriptions for registered servers in a Central Management Server (CMS).
- Export registered server information.
- Import registered server information.
- View the SQL Server log files for online or offline instances of SQL Server.
