Understanding SharePoint storage quota when migrating from Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint)

When migrating videos from Stream (Classic) to Stream on (SharePoint) you'll consume the existing file storage quota from OneDrive and SharePoint. Many customers have storage quota questions related to Stream migration. Following are answers to the most frequent questions:

How much storage was included in Stream (Classic)?

Stream (Classic) came with 500 GB per tenant and 0.5 GB per user licensed. For example, if your tenant had 20-K licensed users, it would have 10.5 TB of Stream Classic storage. Additionally, tenants were able to add units of 500 GB at $100/month for each unit.

Will our Stream (Classic) storage allocation get added to my SharePoint storage allocation?

No. The migration process doesn't grant customers free, extra SharePoint storage. However, there are actions you can take to minimize the amount of SharePoint storage you use in your migration. See tips section at the end.

How much SharePoint storage does my organization have?

The amount of Microsoft SharePoint storage for your organization is based on your number of licenses. Your organization has total storage of 1 TB plus 10 GB per license of eligible plan purchased, plus any Microsoft 365 Extra File Storage add-on purchased. How much OneDrive Storage does my organization have?

For most subscription plans, the default storage space for each user's OneDrive is 1 TB. Depending on your plan and the number of licensed users, you may be able to increase this storage to 5 TB per user at no cost. Extra storage can be requested by contacting Microsoft support. F3 plans include 2-GB OneDrive storage per user.

Tips to minimize your use of SharePoint storage when migrating videos to Stream (on SharePoint)

  1. Take stock of your video inventory. If you have old videos or videos that haven't been watched in the past 120 days, consider if they need to be migrated.
  2. Run the Stream (Classic) video report to see if there are extra-large files that don't need to be migrated.
  3. Migrate your Teams Meeting Recordings to the file owner’s OneDrive. If you max out your 1 TB per user storage, you can request extra OneDrive storage at no cost.
  4. Consider leaving behind older Teams Meeting Recordings, as they'll likely never be watched. TMRs have a high decay rate. From aggregate data we've seen that 50% TMRs are never watched, 90% aren't watched after 30 days and 99% aren't watched after 120 days.
  5. Set your retention policies in new Stream so that your Teams Meeting Recordings go to the recycle bin after a set period. The default retention period is 60 days (about two months).
