What do I need to take online lessons?

Taking online lessons is simple and only requires a few tools, which you probably already have.**

You can take online lessons through your TakeLessons student account using our TakeLessons Classroom tools.  In addition, you will need the following equipment:

  • A fast and reliable computer: This can be a desktop, laptop or tablet. To ensure a great experience we don't recommend doing this with your smartphone.  The faster your system is, the more reliable your connection will be.  Most computers purchased within the last few years should work great!
  • Broadband/high-speed internet: Standard Cable or DSL connection should work just fine - but we do not recommend online lessons with dial-up internet. If you want the best video chat experience, plug your computer directly into the wall.
  • Webcam: If your computer or tablet was purchased within the last 5 years, your camera is more than good enough. If older than 5 years browse cameras here for as low as $10.
  • Microphone: Most laptops or tablets have great mics built in so you should be covered. If your device's microphone isn't working or does not have one, browse here.

Questions about the tools needed, and/or set up, are typically answered by your teacher.  We recommend getting in touch with your instructor to discuss the online tools needed, if you require a different video platform (Skype, FaceTime, etc.), and your set up, before the first lesson.  We are here to help as well.
