Professional developers often need more than what standard Dataverse form and grid controls can show. Sometimes a field or dataset needs custom logic, richer visuals, or tighter data binding than a web resource can provide. For these cases, a code component built with the Power Apps component framework (PCF) replaces the standard control with your own TypeScript-driven UI. That UI stays reusable across forms, views, and tables, and it's easier to maintain than ad hoc scripts.

Consider an internal equipment-provisioning system built on Dataverse, with tables for employee, device, request, and allowance records. An employee submits a request for replacement equipment, and the system checks their allowance before a coordinator approves and fulfills it. The standard request form can't show live device availability or let the employee browse device photos and specs without leaving the page. A code component fills that gap, rendering real-time availability and an inline device picker directly on the form.

In this module, you explore how a code component moves through its lifecycle events and how its manifest declares the properties, resources, and data types it needs. You also learn how to implement the component's interfaces and use Device, Utility, and Web API features.

These features let you read platform information, connect to Dataverse data, and understand when a component reaches an external service. Finally, you learn how to package a component, deploy it to an environment, and add it to a model-driven or canvas app.

By the end of this module, you can design, build, and deploy a code component that handles lifecycle events and reads and writes data through its manifest-defined properties. It also uses platform features to extend a Dataverse form with custom, reusable UI logic.
